Georgia O'Keeffe in York Maine, 1920-1928

Join us for a look at the history of Georgia O'Keeffe during her time in York, Maine. Few people realize that York played a meaningful role in Georgia O'Keeffe's artistic development. While spending summers at a seaside guest house on Long Sands Beach between 1920 and 1928, she found inspiration in the Maine coast, where her study of seashells marked a significant turning point in her artistic journey and her lifelong pursuit of distilling nature to its essential forms. “Several years ago, I noticed an article by the Boston Globe arts critic saying that in York Beach, you can walk on the same wet sand where Georgia O'Keeffe walked a hundred years ago. I was surprised and curious because I have been coming to York for many years, and I have never encountered any reference to O'Keeffe in connection with this place. I began to research and collect information which led me on a learning adventure about O'Keeffe's time here and the art she created in York that I will share in this exhibit and talk.” - Sylvia Missal, York Resident and presenter.
